BRIEF BIOGRAPHY

Simon qualified with a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine & Surgery (BVMS) from the University of Glasgow in 2000. He spent five years in predominantly production animal veterinary practice, initially in West Stirlingshire and then more recently in North Down. Having sustained a spinal injury, Simon left general veterinary practice to establish Veterinary Northern Ireland (VetNI) where he held the post of Secretary General. He represents the local profession in the North of Ireland on the Council of the British Veterinary Association (BVA) and is an Honorary Life Member of the Association of Veterinary Surgeons Practising in Northern Ireland (AVSPNI).
In 2007, Simon joined the Agri-Food & Biosciences Institute (AFBI) Veterinary Sciences Division as a Veterinary Research Officer. Whilst maintaining an active interest in general agricultural and veterinary politics, his professional interests remain firmly within the farm animal sector and, more specifically, within the area of bovine health. He is currently researching aspects of the pathogenesis, virology and immunology of bovine parainfluenza type 3 virus (BPI3V) in calves, and this work is forming the basis of his PhD for which he currently working on a part-time basis through AFBI and QUB.

MAIN RESEARCH INTERESTS
